This style of session could be done artistically "in studio," or casually in the clients home; alone, or with the father. I usually recommend booking the session before the last month of the pregnancy.

While many women request this type of session, others are perplexed. Sometimes I'll be asked "Why would someone be interested in this type of session?" Here are several reasons, but there are probably many more:

The most obvious is for the father who cannot be present for the majority of the pregnancy such as if he is sent overseas in the military or because of a similar job that requires his absence.

Another reason is for the child. Many of us can't possibly imagine our parents being young and struggling through a pregnancy. It is a beautiful way of SHOWING our children when they are young adults that we HAVE "been there." It's also a beautiful way of showing them that your love for them began in the womb!

A third reason is due to the age we live in. In a day when children can come before the perfect husband is found, the maternity session is a way for the man in your life to feel more a part of your mini family already in progress.

And a fourth reason is shown by this paraphrase of one of my clients: "Of course I want beautiful pictures of my pregnancy—the changes my body is going through are COOL, but I'll be danged if I'm going to go through it again!"

I'm sure there are many other reasons, but basically what could be more beautiful than a mother glowing with the expectation of the arrival of her baby?
